Episode 53: Shit Happens: Learning From Mistakes featuring Fred Rutman
Show Notes
I’d like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.
Know what sucks? Being the leader and making a mistake that affects one, or all, of your team members.
Here’s the thing: Shit happens.
As the leader, you are going to make mistakes. Many of them. Often. Especially in the beginning.
However, I promise you, it can always be worse.
I can also promise you that if you remain open to learning from your mistakes, you’ll make them less often.
But how can we do learn from our mistakes?
In this episode, you’ll hear from Fred Rutman, a former professor who is now unwillingly retired, and who has died, literally, dozens of times. Fred will be your reminder that shit happens and that it can always be worse. Fred will talk about his leadership journey and how his personal life experiences have shaped how he chooses to lead.
